親パレスチナ団体はなぜ絵画を切り裂いたのか。環境問題やパレスチナ侵攻とアートについて「セトラー・コロニアリズム(入植植民地主義)」の視点から考える(文:Maya Erin Masuda)
ヴァンダリズムなのだろうか?
さて、バルフォア卿の絵画に対する切り裂きに話を戻すと、それが紛れもない破壊行為であり、同時に帝国主義のナラティブへ一石を投じる行為であることは言うまでもないだろう。本稿を書くにあたって、今回の事件は正当化しうるのかという議論に筆者も大変悩まされ、検討の為に長い時間を要した。というのも本件は、セトラー・コロニアリズム、帝国主義、絵画史、非暴力抗議の歴史、視覚政治、そして様々な記憶と記録の政治が交差する、大変複雑な領域に位置しているからである。同時に、(私も含む)グローバル・ウェストがひとつの絵画への攻撃について議論を重ねているあいだにも、アメリカがその輸出源の53パーセント、ドイツがその輸出源の47パーセントを担う爆薬・ドローン・ロケットなどの兵器(*28)が、パレスチナの図書館を、大学を、文化を破壊し、病院を爆破している。10月から虐殺が続き、大量の共同体が、命が奪われているこの世界の面前で、この圧倒的な武力と権力の不均衡をどう受け止めようか。 だからこそ、本件について私にまだ書けることがあるとすれば、それはこれまで帝国が用いてきた、またあらゆる未来の帝国が武器化しうる記憶の上書きについての手法を分析し、未来の批評的土壌を作るということなのではないかと思う。上記の議論で示したとおり、植民地を理想化して描く風景画(*29)や、植民者の称揚としての肖像画・彫像などに見られるように、植民地支配やインペリアル・アートの本質の一端が、「歴史」という名の下における別の共同体の記憶の忘却・ナラティブの上書きに宿るとしたら。そして、視覚文化そのものが、その戦略の構築に大きな役割を担ってきたとしたなら(*30)。一連の抗議は、バルフォアの肖像といった描かれた記号だけに向けられたものではなく、帝国の視覚政治(ヴィジュアル・ポリティクス)そのもの、そしてそれに伴う記憶の上書き行為や、人々と環境の間に形成される「親密さ」・もしくは相互補完関係の、恣意的な排除に向けられたものだと理解することができる。 絵画を守ることが重要なのであれば、いま我々にできることは、そうした帝国主義と芸術のつながりについて誰よりも批判的になることではないだろうか。帝国主義が芸術を利用する手法について学び、他方にある失われた記憶を知り、そしてそれを「知る」ということの限界を理解し、それでも向こう側を想像しようと苦戦することではないか。帝国のナラティブを別の単純化されたナラティブで置き換えるのではなく、複雑さを複雑さとして受け止め、そこに表出しない共同体の存在に耳を傾けること。失望する前に、できることはまだ沢山あると信じている。 *1──https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/climate-activists-throw-soup-mona-lisa-leonardo-da-vinci-180983677/ , *2──https://www.tokyoartbeat.com/articles/-/climate-art-protests-maya-yasuda-202211 *3──https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/lord-balfour-portrait-slashed-israel-palestine-protest-1234699348/ *4──https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2018/11/2/more-than-a-century-on-the-balfour-declaration-explained *5──パレスチナ・アクションによる今回の事件への声明:https://www.palestineaction.org/lord-balfour-painting/ *6──https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/lord-balfour-portrait-slashed-israel-palestine-protest-1234699348/ *7──https://artuk.org/discover/stories/fighting-for-representation-suffragettes-and-art-vandalism *8──https://juststopoil.org/2023/11/06/women-didnt-get-the-vote-by-voting-its-time-for-deeds-not-words-just-stop-oil-supporters-smash-suffragette-painting/ *9──https://x.com/JustStop_Oil/status/1746893873455014110 *10──Demos, T.
