レイクエルシノアのコミュニティーサポートマネジャー、アダム・グファロッティ氏は、有害な藻の発生は大きな懸念事項だと話す。南カリフォルニア最大の淡水湖であるエルシノアには世界中から観光客が訪れるが、22年には危険なバクテリアの大発生により湖は半年間閉鎖された。
市は湖の使用料だけで30万ドルを失った。同じことを繰り返さないためにエルシノア湖は2月、モレアーのナノバブル技術を試験的に導入するために200万ドルの投資を開始した。しかし、大規模な水域のための技術的解決策はまだほとんどない。グファロッティ氏によれば、新しいソリューションの多くはエルシノア湖の規模には対応できない。
結局のところ、有害な細菌大発生のリスクを減らす最善の戦略は、窒素とリンの汚染を減らして藻類が必要とする養分を断つことと、二酸化炭素排出量を減らすことだ。これを怠れば、観光業に依存する地域社会は苦境に陥る。
「湖の美しさ、景観の良さ、青さ、透明度は、そもそも人々を引きつけるものだ」が、「それだけではなく、ここでは経済が環境であり環境が経済なのだ」とタホのカウエン氏は話した。
